Product Description

Since the introduction of the LEOPARD 2 main battle tank in the German army in 1978, Rheinmetall Waffe Munition has produced some 300,000 kinetic energy (KE) and multipurpose (MP) rounds in several generations for the tank's 120 mm main armament.

Stocks of service ammunition that are more than ten years old and whose performance level no longer corresponds to the latest requirements can be profitably recycled.

To exploit the economic advantages, the logistical sequences should be timed so that the recycled practise rounds are made useable for training operations prior to the end of the useful life of the components.

Even during the development phase, Rheinmetall Waffe Munition created the design interfaces that enable today's economical recycling operations. For instance, the screwthreading on the penetrator/sabot permits the low-cost replacement of the tungsten WSM penetrator with a practise projectile, with no need to break apart the sabot.

Today, the recycling concepts pioneered by Rheinmetall Waffe Munition are now established features in the new requirements issued by the procurement authorities of Germany and many other countries. Rheinmetall developed the technologies and a plant which enables live 120 mm KE and MP ammunition to be recycled into practise rounds. Thus far, well over 100,000 live rounds have been converted into practise ammunition.
Main features
Recycled rounds are more than 30 percent less expensive than newly manufactured practise ammunition
Reduced waste disposal costs
Protects the environment by conserving valuable raw materials
Avoids the extra costs entailed in storing ageing ammunition stocks
Reuses the raw material (tungsten) in the case of KE rounds
