An interior/exterior concrete etching product that is specifically formulated to remove rust and red clay stains, efflorescence and mineral deposits from concrete surfaces. It prepares concrete and masonry surfaces for painting, staining and sealing. Its biodegradable detergents are suitable for use indoors or outdoors and can be used full strength for tough stains or diluted for new concrete or light rust stains.
- Concrete Etcher & Rust Remover No. 991 - MSDS
Where To Use
Ideal for removing rust stains caused by sprinklers, air conditioners, wrought iron furniture, nails, bikes, cars and tools.
DO NOT USE ON MARBLE, GRANITE, TERRAZZO OR COLORED CONCRETE.
If BEHR® CONCRETE ETCHER & RUST REMOVER accidentally comes in contact with brass, bronze or copper metal, rinse immediately with clean, fresh water.
Use on interior or exterior bare concrete, cement and cinder block surfaces such as garage floors, driveways, walkways, patios, pool decks, basement floors and basement walls.
Caution: Surfaces may become slippery when wet.
Use caution when walking on surface when moisture is present.
(The following steps are recommended for best results)
Be sure to have the following items available before using BEHR CONCRETE ETCHER & RUST REMOVER: source for tap water, garden hose with nozzle, acid resistant rubber gloves, safety glasses or goggles, large plastic mixing container, stiff bristled (non-metal) broom or brush, non-metal squeegee or mop (for interior jobs) and protective plastic drop cloths.
Clean surface dirt and grease from all concrete surfaces with BEHR NO. 990 CONCRETE CLEANER & DEGREASER. See product label for directions and other uses.
Completely strip all coatings prior to use. On exterior surfaces use BEHR NO. 64 15 MINUTE QUIK-FIX DECK FINISH REMOVER & WOOD RESURFACER. On interior surfaces or for 100% acrylic water-based products, use a conventional paint stripper.
Be sure to rins e thoroughly before treating with BEHR CONCRETE ETCHER & RUST REMOVER.
For new concrete surfaces, allow approximately 30 days for surface to cure before etching.
Protect grass and any nearby plants by dampening these areas with water and covering with plastic drop cloths. NOTE: FAILURE TO KEEP AREAS DAMPENED WILL RESULT IN DAMAGE TO PLANTS AND GRASS.
Once the surface is ready for coating, use floor finishes such as BEHR PORCH & FLOOR ENAMEL, BEHR 1-PART EPOXY ACRYLIC CONCRETE & GARAGE FLOOR PAINT, SEMI-TRANSPARENT CONCRETE STAIN or BEHR SOLID COLOR CONCRETE STAIN. Follow all label instructions.
Wear protective clothing, goggles and acid resistant rubber gloves.
Be sure the plastic mixing container is large enough to hold up to 2 gallons of diluted solution. Do not mix or use in a metal container.
For new concrete, dilute BEHR CONCRETE ETCHER & RUST REMOVER by pouring one part product into one part water.
Use full strength on exterior, heavily stained areas or diluted on interior or exterior lightly stained and soiled surfaces. DO NOT USE FULL STRENGTH ON INTERIOR SURFACES. Always work in a well-ventilated area.
Use a diluted solution 1:1 (1 Part BEHR CONCRETE ETCHER & RUST REMOVER to 1 part water) to etch galvanized metal to prepare it for painting or coating.
Mix the diluted solution by carefully stirring; avoid splashing.
Wear protective clothing, goggles, rubber boots and acid resistant rubber gloves. This product contains a strong acid that can cause eye or skin burns if not handled carefully. Avoid excessive splashing when using the product. Spraying is not recommended.
One gallon of diluted solution will etch and clean 300-400 sq. ft. and one gallon of full strength product will etch and clean 150-200 sq. ft. Actual coverage depends on porosity and severity of surface soil or rust. For extremely hard to clean, soiled and stained surfaces, use product at full strength.
Keep area wet with water before and during the application of BEHR CONCRETE ETCHER & RUST REMOVER. Do not apply to dry surface.
Work small areas at a time. To ensure even etching on sloped surfaces, start at the lowest point working up to the highest point.
Apply BEHR® CONCRETE ETCHER & RUST REMOVER to a wet surface. Allow product to stand for 5 to 10 minutes and scrub with a stiff-bristled, non-metal brush or broom.
Rinse surface thoroughly with fresh water while scrubbing with broom. Do not let product dry on the surface. If product dries on the surface and a white powdery residue remains, this must be removed by retreating with a diluted solution (1 Part BEHR NO. 991 CONCRETE ETCHER & RUST REMOVER to 2 parts water) of the product and scrubbing with a stiff-bristled, non-metal brush. Rinse thoroughly with water.
Failure to thoroughly remove powdery residue will prevent proper adhesion of coatings.
Remove excess water with a non-metal squeegee or mop.
Some heavily stained areas or older stains may require additional applications. The etched surface is ready when it feels like fine to medium grit sandpaper and no residue or loose concrete remains on the surface.
Test concrete by placing cloth duct tape in random areas on the bare dry concrete. If a white residue or particles are pulled onto the tape, the surface is not sound and should be rinsed while scrubbing until no loose particles remain.
For VERTICAL SURFACES, clean thoroughly (use Behr No. 990 CONCRETE CLEANER & DEGREASER) prior to etching. Wet surface with water prior to use. Use a stiff-bristled, non-metal broom or brush and dip into diluted solution and scrub surface. Rinse with fresh water while scrubbing. Rinse thoroughly. Allow surface to dry completely prior to painting or staining. All coatings must be removed completely prior to use. If stripping is necessary, use BEHR NO. 64 15 MINUTE QUIK-FIX DECK FINISH REMOVER & WOOD RESURFACER on exterior surfaces and a conventional chemical stripper on interior surfaces and on 100% acrylic water-based products.
Close container for storage or disposal.
Thoroughly rinse all surfaces, clothing and tools with fresh water after use.
For disposal of empty containers and unused product, contact your household refuse collection service.
If BEHR CONCRETE ETCHER & RUST REMOVER accidentally comes in contact with painted or finished surfaces, rinse immediately with fresh water. It will damage automobile finishes if not rinsed.
